The above 2 links are articles relating to Fertility, written by Janetta Bensouilah which were recently published in Essence magazine in March 2007.

University of Surrey researchers followed the progress of 367 couples over a period of 3 years (1990-93).  The women in the survey were aged between 22 and 45, and the men were aged between 25 and 59.  In total 37% of the couples had a history of infertility, 38% had experienced between 1 and 5 miscarriages while others had had other problems including stillbirths, malformations and low birth weight babies. Many of the couples were 'older', and viewed the trial as a last resort.

All couples were asked to eliminate alcohol and smoking, and to follow specific dietary guidelines. All the couples were given personal mineral supplement programmes and were re-tested to ensure their levels had returned to normal.

By the end of the 3 year trial, 89% (327) of the couples had given birth.  Out of those couples with a previous history of infertility, 81% conceived and had babies. Out of those couples who had experienced a previous miscarriage, 83% had a baby without experiencing another miscarriage.

Of the total 327 babies born in the study, no baby was born before 36 weeks gestation, and none was lighter than 5ib 2oz.  There were no miscarriages, perinatal deaths or malformations and no baby was admitted to a special baby care unit. The nantional average for miscarriages at the time was 1:4, so with these statistics in mind it would have been expected that approximately 80 miscarriages would have ocurred - there were none.

A number of couples had already tried IVF, sometimes 2 or 3 times without success, 65% of this group conceived naturally without needing another IVF cycle.
